how to make a crutch
Rolling a crutch by hand is fairly simple. Your first few attempts may come out loose or poorly shaped, but with a little practice, you’ll be able to roll your own filters with ease. You can make a crutch with just about anything. Business cards have been historically popular for this purpose, index cards work well, and now many papers include crutch materials in the package as well. Here’s what to do:
- Trim down your business card to a piece that's roughly a half-inch wide. (No need for a ruler, you can do this by eye.)
- Starting at one end, fold the paper into an accordion shape (think M shape). Be sure to keep enough paper at the end to encase your folds.
- Wrap the remaining paper around the accordion, surrounding it with a circle.
Once you're ready to level up your DIY crutch skills, you can add a variety of techniques and shapes to your know-how. Anything from a spiral to more intricate folds like a peace sign, or leaf design. And, if you have no interest in folding your own, store-bought crutches made from glass, ceramic, wood, silicone, and corn husk have become increasingly available.
